BLEPHEROPLASTY

An eyelid surgery referred as “blepharoplasty” improves the appearance of the eyes. With this procedure the surgeon removes the excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids.

What can blepharoplasty do?

This surgery restores the youthful appearance of the face by getting rid of droopy eyelids or bags beneath your eyes. Eyelid surgery may be the appropriate decision for you if you want to address drooping eyelids or bags beneath your eyes. If you have a droopy eyelid problem, the surgeon performs “upper blepharoplasty” and if you have an eye bag problem the surgeon performs lower blepharoplasty.

How is blepharoplasty performed?

For an upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid. The excess fat deposits, if any, are removed from here. Also, the muscles are tightened, and the excess skin is taken out from that incision to restore the youthful appearance of the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery results generally last about 5-7 years.

For a lower eyelid surgery an incision is made just below eyelash line or inside the lower eyelid. From there, the surgeon removes the orbital fat pockets found in the bags under the eyes.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

You might consider eyelid surgery if you have droopy looking eyes, or you have excess skin on your eyelids. This surgery is also suitable for patients who want to get rid of their excess undereye bags. It will restore the signs of aging around your eyes.

What is the recovery like after the surgery?

Recovery from an eyelid lift is generally short. Patients can resume their daily activities in few days. Patients who have upper lid surgery can resume work after 7-10 days. For lower eyelid surgery this period prolongs to 10-14 days as it takes longer to heal.

During eyelid surgery, two different types of stitches are used. In general, self-dissolving sutures do not need removal; however, the other type of sutures will need to be removed after 7-10 days.

How is the aftercare?

Mild bruising and swelling are expected after the surgery. Putting ice packs over the treated areas is recommended to alleviate the pain. If necessary, oral pain medication can be prescribed. Eyedrops are prescribed to counteract the dryness you might experience during your healing process.
