Breast reduction, also known as “Reduction Mammoplasty”, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. This procedure can help alleviate physical symptoms such as back and neck pain, as well as emotional or social discomfort caused by large breasts. Breast reduction surgery can also improve the shape and contour of the breasts, making them more proportionate to the rest of the body. It is typically performed under general aesthesia and recovery time can vary.

At Nuannce Health, our surgeons aim to provide you with the best outcome for your breast reduction surgery by reducing the size of your breasts to give you a more proportionate figure. To schedule a consultation and learn more about the procedure, please reach out to us.

What can Breast Reduction do?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can achieve several goals, such as:

  • Reduce the size and weight of the breasts, which can alleviate physical symptoms such as back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and skin irritation caused by large breasts.
  • Improve the shape and contour of the breasts, making them more proportionate to the rest of the body.
  • Elevating the nipples and areolas to a more youthful position
  • Improve self-esteem and boost self-confidence by reducing discomfort or embarrassment associated with large breasts.
  • It also can help with asymmetry or uneven breast size.

How is Breast Reduction surgery performed?

A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. It is performed under general anaesthesia, and on average, it takes 2-5 hours. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Anaesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general aesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort during the surgery.
  2. Incision: The surgeon will make incisions around the areola, and possibly down the breast and along the crease. The incision pattern will depend on the size of the breast and the degree of reduction desired.
  3. Reshaping: The surgeon will remove excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue to reduce the size of the breasts. The nipples and areolas will also be repositioned to a higher position on the breast.
  4. Closing incisions: The incisions will be closed with sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape.
  5. Drainage tubes: The surgeon may insert one or more small drainage tubes to allow any excess fluids to escape. These will be removed after a few days.
  6. Recovery: Recovery time varies but patients can expect to take some time off work and to limit physical activity for a certain period of time.

What is the recovery like after a Breast Reduction surgery?

Patients will be required to wear a surgical bra or bandage for a few weeks to support the breasts as they heal. You will be given pain medication to help manage any discomfort or pain you may experience. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within one to two weeks after the surgery. Physical activities should be avoided for several weeks, including heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, to allow the breasts to heal properly.

How is the aftercare of a Breast Reduction Surgery?

The aftercare for a breast reduction surgery includes the following:

  • Pain Management: The patient will experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery. Surgeon may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, to help reduce swelling and inflammation, medication to prevent blood clots, such as heparin; an oral pain medication such as an opioid to manage pain and antibiotics to prevent infection.
  • Surgical Bra: Generally, most patients will wear a surgical bra or compression garment for the first four weeks after the surgery as directed by the surgeon. This will help to support the breasts and to control swelling during the healing process.
  • Incision Care: The patient will need to keep the incision site clean and dry. The patient will be advised to avoid showering for a certain period of time after the surgery, usually 48-72 hours, to allow the incision site to begin healing properly.
  • Physical Activity: The patient will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or any physically demanding activities for several weeks after the surgery as directed by the surgeon.
  • Follow-up Appointments: The patient will be seen by the surgeon for follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and to ensure that the incision is healing well. The surgeon will also check the position of the implant, the healing process and the overall results.
Frequently Asked Questions

Typically, patients will need to stay in Turkey for about 5 days. This time frame allows for enough time for the initial recovery, post-operative check-ups, and for any complications that may arise.

Most people can return to work within 2-3 weeks after the surgery, but it’s important to avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting during the recovery period.

A breast lift (mastopexy) and a breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) are two different surgical procedures that address different concerns.

A breast lift is a procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts, by removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipples. This procedure is typically done to correct drooping or sagging breasts, restore breast volume and shape, and improve the position of the nipples.

On the other hand, a breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the size of the breasts by placing an implant (saline or silicone) behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle. This procedure is typically done to increase breast size, improve the symmetry of the breasts and enhance the overall appearance of the breasts.

In summary, a breast lift addresses sagging and reshapes the breast, while a breast augmentation increases the size of the breast. Both procedures can be performed together if the patient desire both an lift and an augmentation.
