Breast Augmentation Surgery

How is Breast Augmentation surgery performed?

Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia. The specific technique used will depend on the patient’s individual goals and anatomy, as well as the type of implant being used.

The most common technique for breast augmentation is the inframammary incision, which involves making an incision in the crease beneath the breast. Through this incision, a pocket is created in the breast tissue, and the implant is inserted. The implant can be placed either behind the muscle (submuscular) or in front of the muscle (subglandular) depending on the patient’s anatomy and surgeon’s preference.

Another technique is the periareolar incision, which involves making an incision around the areola. This technique can be used for both silicone and saline implants.

A third technique is the transaxillary incision, which involves making an incision in the armpit. This technique can be used for silicone implants only.

After the implant is in place, the incision is closed with sutures, and a bandage is applied over the surgical area. The surgery usually takes about 1-2 hours.

What is the recovery like after a breast augmentation surgery?

Immediately following the surgery, the patient may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising. These symptoms can be managed with pain medication prescribed by the surgeon. The patient will be required to wear a surgical bra or compression garment to help with healing and support the breasts.

How is the aftercare?

The aftercare for a breast augmentation surgery includes the following:

  • Pain Management: The patient will experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery. Surgeon may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, to help reduce swelling and inflammation, medication to prevent blood clots, such as heparin; an oral pain medication such as an opioid to manage pain and antibiotics to prevent infection.
  • Surgical Bra: Generally, most patients will wear a surgical bra or compression garment for the first four weeks after the surgery as directed by the surgeon. This will help to support the breasts and to control swelling during the healing process.
  • Incision Care: The patient will need to keep the incision site clean and dry. The patient will be advised to avoid showering for a certain period of time after the surgery, usually 48-72 hours, to allow the incision site to begin healing properly.
  • Physical Activity: The patient will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or any physically demanding activities for several weeks after the surgery as directed by the surgeon.
  • Follow-up Appointments: The patient will be seen by the surgeon for follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and to ensure that the incision is healing well. The surgeon will also check the position of the implant, the healing process and the overall results.

Frequently Asked Questions

The surgery itself takes about 1-2 hours, and you will need to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights for monitoring and observation. After that, you will be able to go back to your hotel, but you need to stay in Turkey for at least 4 days for the follow-up appointments and for the recovery process.

In general, most people are able to return to work within 1 week if the implant is subglandular or three weeks if the implant is submuscular.  as long as their work does not involve heavy lifting or strenuous activities.

It is possible to breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery, but it can depend on the type of surgery and the incision location. In most cases, breast augmentation surgery does not affect the ability to produce milk or breastfeed. The surgeon will place the implant either under the chest muscle or under the breast tissue, but not in the milk ducts or glands.

The lifespan of breast implants can vary depending on the type of implant and the individual’s body. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, silicone breast implants typically have a lifespan of about 10-20 years, while saline breast implants have a lifespan of about 10-15 years. However, these are just estimates and the implants may need to be replaced earlier or later. It is recommended to have regular check-ups with your plastic surgeon to monitor the condition of your implants, as well as to discuss any concerns you may have.
